Due to having very few Health Survey Forms returned during the past year,
I can report that there have been no new Health issues which have not already been catalogued previously. One dog with Neurological problems has been reported. Therefore the Health of the Podengos
which have previously surveyed with or without issues have remained the same.
A new concerning issue which has
not been reported in the UK by those members of the parent Club, is that there is an emerging eye problem which has been reported
in the USA. In the UK we do not have very much of these bloodlines, although some were imported in the last two or three years
from these Kennels. The three conditions emerging in the USA AND Finland are PRA, Glaucoma and Cataracts. Their tests are
reported to OFA in the USA.
PPP America has determined that three areas of testing should be completed and passed
before any dogs are bred from. The three required tests are: Hip Dysplasia (OFA Evaluation or Penn HIP Evaluation) Eye Examination (CERF or OFA/CAER registrations) Patellar Luxation (OFA Evaluation)
The OFA USA ranks the Portuguese
Podengo up to December 2014 as being No.13 with the Patellar Luxation condition, which is something which needs to be considered
looking into the future in the UK.

List of all reported health issues in the Podengo that have appeared in the UK since 2006
Whilst the list appears long, the majority of
these conditions are commonly found in virtually every canine breed. Obviously the ones which are of greater concern are those
that appear to be inherited.
