Breed History

The Portuguese Podengo is one of Portugal’s oldest and most distinctive breeds, with a history dating back over a thousand years. Originally valued for their agility, alertness, and problem-solving abilities, Podengos developed alongside humans as active, intelligent companions in rural settings.

Over time, they were known to assist in various tasks—including controlling vermin and navigating challenging terrain. These roles helped shape the Podengo’s signature traits: sharp senses, independence, and a strong bond with their human companions.

Recognition and Reach

The Pequeno variety has gained the most popularity internationally and was officially recognised by The Kennel Club (UK) in 2003. It has since become a regular at events like Crufts, with approximately 500 Podengos now living in the UK.

They are classified as primitive-type hounds by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), a nod to their early development rather than their function today.
